Memorial Day: Honoring Service and Sacrifice

Memorial Day is a U.S. federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May, dedicated to honoring the memory of military service members who died while serving in the Armed Forces. What began after the Civil War as "Decoration Day" — when communities placed flowers and flags on the graves of fallen soldiers — has grown into a national day of remembrance for all Americans who gave their lives in service to their country. Today, the holiday is marked by ceremonies at cemeteries and memorials, moments of silence, and educational programs that reflect on the meaning of freedom and the enduring importance of remembrance.

Memorial Day Events in the D.C. & Northern Virginia Area

Members of our university community in the Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia area are encouraged to participate in local Memorial Day events that bring together learning, service, and remembrance. Below are several nearby activities taking place over Memorial Day weekend:

-Arlington National Cemetery Memorial Day Observance — The national ceremony at Arlington features a wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and a formal program in the Memorial Amphitheater, with military honor guards, bands, and remarks from national leaders.
-Falls Church Memorial Day Parade and Festival — Falls Church hosts a morning remembrance ceremony followed by a community parade, live entertainment, and family-friendly activities in the city center, all centered on honoring veterans and fallen service members.
-City of Fairfax Memorial Day Ceremony — Fairfax's observance includes a presentation of colors, patriotic music, and the reading of the names of local residents who lost their lives in military service.
-Great Falls Freedom Memorial Ceremony — The Great Falls Freedom Memorial holds a Memorial Day program featuring a color guard, keynote speaker, patriotic music, and a reading of the names of Great Falls residents who died in service to the nation.

We invite all members of our community to take time this Memorial Day to reflect on the history and significance of the holiday, honor the sacrifices of service members and their families, and, when possible, attend a local ceremony or participate in an act of remembrance.
